As you are planning to visit Kenya, you need a valid visa that will allow you to enter, stay or leave then Kenyan within the specified period. However, the need for a visa depends on international agreements, security policies, and diplomatic relations between Kenya and your country.
As of January 5, 2024, Kenya implemented a new Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system for all travelers entering the country. The system replaces the previous eVisa platform and aims to streamline the entry process. If you want to visit Kenya, here is what you need to know about applying for a visa to Kenya:
Who Needs an eTA?
All foreign nationals wishing to enter Kenya are required to obtain an eTA prior to their departure. This includes travelers from all countries that previously did not require a visa. However, holders of valid Kenyan passports, permanent residents, East Africa community members, special diplomatic arrangements and individuals with valid work permits don’t need to apply for eTA.
eTA Application Process
Follow the following steps to apply for eTA.
Register Online: Visit the official eTA Kenya portal and create an account.
Complete the Application Form: Provide personal details, passport information, and travel plans.
Upload Required Documents: These typically include a recent passport-sized photograph and a scanned copy of your passport’s biographical page.
Pay the Processing Fee: Payments can be made using major payment cards.
Await Approval: Processing times may vary. Once approved, download and print your eTA from your account.
Required Documents
When applying for an eTA, ensure you have the following:
Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Kenya and have at least two blank pages.
Recent Passport-Sized Photograph: A clear, colored photo taken within the last six months.
Travel Itinerary: Details of your flight bookings, your activities during your stay and accommodation.
Invitation Letter: If visiting friends or family, include an invitation letter and a copy of the host’s ID or passport.
Types of Kenyan Visa
Single Entry Visa- This is for travelers visiting Kenya for tourism, business or medical purposes. It is valid for 90 days only.
- Multiple Entry Visa. This is suitable for businesspersons and tourists with multiple trips to Kenya
- Transit Visa. This is required for travelers passing Kenya and staying less than 72 hours. However, if you are not leaving the terminal, you don’t need this type of visa.
- East African Tourist Visa. This allows East Africa community members to travel between East African countries. It is valid for 90 days.
- Courtesy Visa. These are for diplomats, officials and service passport holders visiting on official duty.
- Digital Nomad Visa: Kenya has introduced a digital nomad visa for remote workers. Applicants need a valid passport, proof of remote employment, accommodation details in Kenya, a clean criminal record, and a minimum annual income of $55,000
When planning to visit Kenya, consider the following;
Yellow Fever Vaccination: You need a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for you to enter Kenya more so if you are coming from countries with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
